This 1,200 s.f. vertically oriented duplex apartment is a unique arrangement for Manhattan and has two full bedrooms and bathrooms, two working fireplaces and an outdoor terrace. Our idea was to tie the upstair outdoor space together with the interior as much as possible. This was achieved by creating an atrium area around the connecting stair allowing for glimpses of sky upon entering the apartment. Shards of southern light bathe the west walls of the stair atrium as the day passes. The lower level is designed with a central open kitchen that includes casual dining on the counter island and views from front to rear. A sliding wooden barn door closes off a home office on the lower floor and a large sliding glass panel above provides privacy from the lower level and terrace as needed.
